What a 5 minute timer is good for

A 5 minute timer is the smallest block worth setting. It is short enough that starting costs almost nothing, which makes it the right tool for the task you keep avoiding: open the document, answer the one email, put the dishes away. Once the clock is running, the hardest part is usually behind you.

Five minutes also works as a hard stop. Use it to cap a break, a stretch, or a round of scrolling, so a pause stays a pause instead of turning into half an hour.

Try it for

  • Start a task you keep putting off
  • Tidy a desk or one shelf
  • Stretch between focus blocks
  • Steep a pot of tea
  • A quick classroom transition
  • Cap a phone break

Getting the most from 5 minutes

  1. Aim to start, not to finish

Don't try to complete the job in five minutes. Just begin. If you're still going when the alarm rings, press Restart or flip to a longer face.

  2. Use it to end a break

Between two longer sessions, five minutes is enough to stand up and refill your water, and short enough that you actually come back.

  3. Keep the sound on

When the timer guards a break, leave the chime on so you hear it from the kitchen. The cube also says Time's up on screen.

5 Minute Timer questions

Is 5 minutes long enough to get anything done?

For getting started, yes. Most tasks feel bigger before you begin than once you're in them, and five minutes is enough to get past that. For finishing, move up to 15 or 30.

How do I run another 5 minutes?

When time is up, press Stop alarm, then Restart. The same five minutes start again without picking the length twice.
