Hands-free rounds of work and rest

An interval timer runs a fixed pattern of effort and recovery, such as 20 seconds hard and 10 seconds easy, for a set number of rounds. Pick a preset or enter your own work, rest and round count, press Start, and put your phone or laptop down. Nothing needs tapping again until the last round is over.

A 10 second get ready comes first so you can reach your position. Three short beeps count down the end of every phase, a bright double tone starts each work block and a lower tone starts each rest. The screen edge turns green for work and amber for rest, so a glance from across the room tells you which one you are in.

The beeps are queued on the browser's audio clock the moment you press Start. They stay on time even when the tab is in the background behind a music player.

Training with intervals

  1. Start with more rest than you think

Beginners do better with 30 seconds on and 30 off. Shorten the rest only once every round feels the same as the first.

  2. Turn the volume up before you begin

The beeps are short, so set your speaker loud enough to hear them over music and breathing before the first round.

  3. Use Every minute for strength sets

Do a fixed number of reps at the top of each minute and rest for whatever is left. The faster you finish, the longer you recover.

Interval Timer questions

What is a Tabata workout?

Eight rounds of 20 seconds at full effort with 10 seconds of rest, four minutes in all. It is the first preset on this page.

Will I hear the beeps with music playing?

Yes. The beeps play through the same speaker as your music. Switch on Beeps and alarm and keep the device volume up.

Can I pause in the middle of a round?

Press Pause or the space bar. The round picks up where it stopped, and the remaining beeps are queued again when you resume.

Can I set my own times?

Open Set your own intervals and enter work and rest in seconds and the number of rounds. Rest can be 0 for back-to-back work blocks. Your last plan is saved on this device.

Can the whole class or gym see it?

Press Full screen on the computer connected to the big screen, or use Second screen to show the timer there while the buttons stay on your laptop.
